Ditch the car and jump on a bike to experience a destination from a new perspective. Here are 7 of the best cities to explore on a bicycle.

Exploring your city by bike would be a blast, but cycling around a new city is even better. The beauty of cycling lies in the variety of bikes available, catering to different adventures and terrains, from gravel paths to smooth concrete. For your safety, it’s crucial to learn more about the right bike for your chosen exploration.

You’re ready to roll once you’ve decided on the right bike. A bike lets you go, stop, and park whenever you want. Plus, renting a bike is much cheaper and easier than renting a decent vehicle. Here are 7 cities worldwide where you can explore on a bicycle.

7 Cities You Need to Explore by Bike

If you aren’t interested in traveling outside of your state, consider visiting a national park. For example, you could bike the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. But, if you’re looking to explore elsewhere, we recommend these seven cities.

1. Tokyo: Japan

Tokyo is well-known for its compact streets and walking culture, making driving a car difficult. However, you’ll have no problem riding a bike to enjoy the sprawling metropolis.

The only problem with biking instead of walking is what you may miss. Since Tokyo has its fair share of small businesses and restaurants, you’ll have to stop and start a lot. Still, if you need to get somewhere quickly or you prefer to travel by bike, you can rent one for a reasonable price.

2. Girona: Spain

Most tourists think of Barcelona or Madrid when they visit Spain, but none of those cities are as jazzed about cycling as Girona.

Many professional cyclists have settled in Girona’s beautiful, hilly, winding road landscape. Tourists should consider biking to the nearby Pyrenees.

3. Portland, Oregon: USA

Portland is rated one of the most bike-obsessed cities in the US due in part to its health-conscious culture. Oregon has an extensive network of bike paths connected to public parks and forests.

Paying attention to the road, even in bike-loving cities, is essential. Illinois 2017 statistics show that 26 bicyclists were killed in car-bicycle accidents, but approximately 800 cyclists die in the US yearly. Wear bright, reflective clothing so that drivers can see you at night.

4. Copenhagen: Denmark

Nordic countries love to cycle, and Denmark is no different. In Copenhagen, most trips are taken on two wheels. It’s estimated that 90% of citizens own a bike, but tourists also need one to travel across bike bridges and cycle highways. Several attractions are only reachable by bike.

5. Montreal, Quebec: Canada

Montreal is home to one of the first bike-sharing services ever and is considered the most friendly city for cyclists. Even a winter trip to Quebec isn’t complete without a quick bike ride.

Within Montreal proper, you’ll find the Réseau Express Vélo, a 184 km (114 mile) long stretch of bike trails across the island. Be sure to schedule a bike tour, as they’re one of the best ways to check out the incredible neighborhoods, local restaurants, and stunning architecture.

6. Bogotá: Columbia

Bogotá is one of the only cities that closes down the streets once a week (Sunday) to give bicyclists free rein of the city. During this time, you can flag down travel guides who’ll offer a tour of the neighborhood. Don’t forget to stop for the street art and decorative cathedrals.

7. Amsterdam: The Netherlands

The Netherlands has so many bike-riding residents that driving is the less popular option. It’s hard to find an Amsterdam native who doesn’t own at least two bicycles, so you’ll fit right in.

As another positive, drivers are taught how to watch for cyclists, making your commute much safer. If you want to check out the Dutch capital, learn how to signal. If you plan to see other sites in the Netherlands, ditch the car altogether, as most towns have narrow roads.
