Wow Experience at the New Scottsdale AWAY Spa

Packed schedule? Out of vacation time? When you can’t truly get “away,” don’t fret — you can always squeeze in a treatment at the W Scottsdale’s brand-new AWAY Spa. Timed to the hotel’s 10th anniversary, the new spa is part of a rolling property-wide renovation that replaces the hotel’s former Bliss Spa and brings an edgier and more energetic vibe to the experience.

In fact, at the AWAY Spa, you’ll feel like you’re a million miles away from all your responsibilities the moment you step foot in the bright, airy first-floor space. Why? Because it’s unlike any spa you’ve visited before.

A Welcome Reception

Turning tradition completely on its side, the W eschewed a stuffy reception desk in favor of one that doubles as a cocktail bar. That’s right, you can enjoy delicious drinks — like the Slippery Slope, with tequila, lemongrass simple syrup, fresh-squeezed lime juice, and a splash of Salerno; Roshambo, a refreshing coconut water rum with turmeric lemongrass simple syrup and coconut cream that you literally “rock-scissors-paper” the bartender/receptionist for; or my personal favorite, the Last Word, made with vodka, agave hibiscus, lime juice and St. Germaine. Is your mouth watering yet?

If you’re looking for more of a detox rather than a buzz, choose a shot of the Elixir Remixer, which combines passion fruit, orange, and mint for a dose of antioxidants and immune-boosting vitamin C. Trust me, you’ll ask for a second round. You can also indulge in small bites, such as sushi rolls, an acai berry bowl, charcuterie board or smoked salmon tostadas.

Treatments Galore at AWAY Spa

By now, you may be wondering if you’re at the hippest new happy hour in town or a spa, so let’s refocus our attention on the other amenities. Right off the cocktail bar, you’ll find the beauty bar, featuring three hairstyling stalls, three pedicure chairs, two hair-washing stations, three manicure stations, and an express massage chair where you can enjoy a quickie massage on your back, neck, and shoulders.

From full makeup application and eye treatments to polish and paraffin, the beauty lounge has everything you need to get glammed up for a night out on the town or a big meeting with your boss.

Behind privacy doors, you’ll find seven treatment rooms, men's and women’s locker rooms with dual steam showers, and a co-ed lounge where you’ll eagerly await your appointments. Choose from massages, facials, and body peels — or book them all! Nobody’s judging. You can also add some enhancements, such as volcanic stones, eye treatments, and various exfoliations.

I thoroughly enjoyed my Prescription Facial, which was fully customized to my skin’s needs (my esthetician, Britan, recommended more moisture). She used Comfort Zone products, an Italian skincare line of high-quality formulas that are free of parabens, silicones, mineral oils, and animal derivates housed in recyclable packaging. Turns out Britan was right — hydration was exactly what this native Arizonan needed to get a baby-soft complexion!

Oh, and the AWAY Spa also offers a Secret Menu, which can be accessed via a secret code and is delivered word-of-mouth to VIPs. But you didn’t hear that from me. Shhh.
