Black Point Inn on the rugged Maine coast offers a magical stay on the water’s edge. Book a stay at this luxurious Prout’s Neck hotel.

Black Point Inn is one of my favorite hotels. It is located on Prout’s Neck, just a few minutes outside Portland, Maine. This luxury hotel is a classic inn perched on the rugged Maine coast. Built in 1878, it is surrounded by water, and my two nights there were quite magical—though not nearly long enough.

Arrival at My Prout’s Neck Hotel

Flying into the Portland International Jetport (PWM) is easy. I flew from Phoenix to Philadelphia, then quickly flew up the coast to Portland. I grabbed a taxi and enjoyed a 20-minute ride to the inn through the small towns on the coast. Turning the corner and seeing the gray and white inn sitting on a hill overlooking the water sent tingles through me. I was already in love.

The check-in was a bit like arriving for a stay with friends. Everyone was welcoming and helpful. The staff operates a quaint old elevator, so they whisked my bags up to the second floor as I checked in, and then I made my way up the broad stairs. Elegant yet comfortable is a formidable combination, but Black Point Inn does it beautifully.

My Room at Black Point Inn

I had a lovely king suite, one of 25 oversized guest rooms in the inn. The room was welcoming with its antique furnishings, floral wall coverings, and a deck that looked out over the grounds and the Atlantic. I had some work to finish during my stay, and I found it easy to work with the free, high-speed Wifi, an excellent desk in the bedroom, and a comfortable separate sitting room.

For comfort, I couldn’t ask for better. While I might not have my home decorated like the inn, it fit perfectly there, and I made myself entirely at home. I loved the bed and wanted to snuggle up under the covers for a little longer each morning. I had a choice of several pillows (including my favorite feather pillows), a soft robe, lovely Egyptian cotton linens, and two bathrooms. Even though it was a tad cool during my stay, I still enjoyed lounging outside on my deck, watching the water.

Other room features included lovely bath amenities, a newspaper delivered to my room each morning, two flat-screen TVs, a full-size hairdryer, ample closet and drawer space, and heavy curtains that let me sleep in a dark, quiet room. I did miss having a safe in the room. There is also no refrigerator or coffee maker/kettle in the room, but you can get cold drinks downstairs in the bar, and the inn serves coffee and tea in the lobby each morning from 6:30 to 9:30 am.

Services and Amenities at Black Point Inn

Black Point Inn has perfected excellent customer service. The most significant “amenity” is the ocean just feet from the inn. Waking up to such amazing views is priceless, but there are so many other amenities that help turn Black Point Inn into the perfect beachfront escape. One of my favorite spots (besides my room) was the Sun Porch, where I curled up for an hour with a book.

I also loved the porch of the Chart Room, one of the hotel’s two dining rooms. While it was a little chilly to dine there, I took my morning tea out on the porch to watch the fog rising from the water.

For those who want to enjoy the outdoors, you can take the 1.75-mile Cliff Walk along the shore, enjoy the two sandy beaches, or spend time in the inn’s outdoor geothermally heated pool. Bikes and kayaks are also available from the inn for exploring the area. To enjoy the outdoors, activities such as nearby fishing, golf, or tennis are easy and accessible. You can also take a yoga class on the inn’s lawn, work out in the fitness center, or walk through the nearby bird sanctuary.

Dining at Black Point Inn

There are many different dining options during your stay at Black Point Inn, making this such a great option for a Prout’s Neck hotel. Complimentary pastries plus coffee and tea are served each morning in the lobby, or you can opt for a full sit-down breakfast in the Chart Room. I loved the cast iron Belgium waffle with Maine maple syrup and fresh berries. The Chart Room is a lovely place to dine with seats on the enclosed verandah, where you can sit and watch the waters of Saco Bay as you plan your day.

The Chart Room is also open daily from 11:30 am to 8 pm for lunch/dinner/all-day dining. I arrived mid-afternoon and wanted a light lunch. I had the most fantastic arugula salad with Vermont goat cheese, fresh Maine blueberries, toasted candied walnuts, and a raspberry vinaigrette.

An afternoon tea service is also served in the lobby daily from 3 to 4:30 pm. After lunch, I enjoyed a lovely cup of tea, which I took to my room and sipped as I enjoyed the fresh Maine air from my private deck.

There are two dinner options. You can eat in the more casual Chart Room (where the sunsets are spectacular) or The Point Restaurant, a fine-dining eatery serving contemporary cuisine. The menu at The Point Restaurant changes occasionally. Still, it includes the same Black Point Inn signature salad I enjoyed for lunch and a delicious French Onion Soup. My scallops for dinner were delicious and prepared to perfection. Still, dessert was the highlight with a trio of goodies—chocolate-covered berries, a chocolate cup filled with fruit, and a mini cheesecake.

In addition to the regular meals, the inn has a great cocktail list (try the raspberry crush with prosecco and muddled raspberries) and several special events, including a weekly manager’s cocktail party, live jazz, and wine tastings.

Overall Stay at the Luxurious Prout’s Neck Hotel

Prout’s Neck is a unique little spit of land that has welcomed politicians, rail barons, and sea lovers for over a century. World-renowned artist Winslow Homer lived and worked in a cottage just down the street (available for a limited number of tours each summer through the Portland Museum of Art). I felt comfortable, welcome, and at home during my stay at Black Point Inn. I didn’t want to leave and hope to return with my husband one of these days. It was one of those rare escapes where you can feel pampered and surrounded by luxury while still feeling completely at home. That’s a rare but welcome find in the hotel world.
