Words With Boards: Custom Cutting Boards Make Great Gifts

I love custom gifts and when they’re made with love that makes it special. I was thrilled when I discovered Baltimore-based Words With Boards, which creates beautiful custom cutting boards. When I received my lovely round Wander board as a courtesy from the company, I knew this small business had something special to offer. Whether you're looking for a perfect bridal gift, hostess gift or something for your own house, the cutting boards from Words With Boards are functional yet magnificent works of art.

The Words With Boards Story

Kim Strassner and Mike Pararas, a Baltimore-based couple, started making cutting boards from leftover butcher blocks for friends at the holidays. The passion blossomed into a business and today they make beautiful custom cutting boards, meat boards and even wine racks from sustainably forested American hardwoods.

An Assortment of Wooden Cutting Boards

I received a round cutting board with Wander carved on it (retail price $140). I was pleased that it is a beautiful, smooth wood and that Wander looks so lovely on the cutting board. There are four little “feet” on the bottom so the wood never has to rest on the counter.

You can customize the cutting boards, having the words designed for your own home or as a gift. They even do custom cut-outs. Some options shown on the website include hearts, honeybees, and flowers. These beautiful cutting boards or serving boards make ideal wedding gifts and housewarming gifts.

While they are beautiful hardwood and it’s obvious from the material and weight that they will hold up perfectly to the toughest cutting jobs, I haven’t been able to put any marks on my cutting board. I decided to use it as a serving board for cheese and fruit. It’s far too pretty to mark up, although chefs tell me that it adds character to a cutting board to have knife cuts on it. I love options on the company's website to use it as a cookie sheet. There are just endless possibilities.

One great solution for those who want to use their cutting board for meat is to purchase one of the carving boards from Words With Boards ($179-199). These beautiful specialized boards are made for carving and are designed to hold the juices from fresh cut meats.

I enjoy entertaining and serving up different types of cheeses, crackers, and snacks. Getting several of these boards in the smaller size is ideal for displaying cheese and crackers. That way, you don’t have to worry about always putting out little signs during a party. The boards (prices start at $49) can also be customized with labels such as “Gluten Free,” “Vegan,” or “Kosher,” to place out during an event.

Words With Boards Offers Many Products

Originally, Words With Boards were designed as simple cutting boards. Today, they offer a number of fun and unique products. In addition to the original square or rectangular cutting boards and serving boards, you can opt for round or oval cutting boards as well.

In addition to the cutting boards, the company also makes the carving boards I mentioned above and—something I am going to have to try—they now make wooden wine racks ($149-$225). These are ideal for my small urban living style. They offer a nice touch of wood and country that fit nicely with almost any style. I know it would be an ideal touch in my house that is quite modern with touches of natural substances, like the wood. And as a wine lover, this is a great way to showcase some special bottles of wine.

I also love the wooden pot holders ($44). I think they’re fun and I may have to order one of those to add a bit of whimsy to my glass-topped dining room table. You can get them with a variety of cut-out shapes or with one of the fifty US shapes. Other whimsical products include dog leash holders and lazy Susans for putting in the center of your table, with prices starting at $58.

I really love finding a great American company that believes in its products. I adore my “Wander” cutting board. I will display cheese and fruit on it during many wine evenings in the years to come.
