Experience the Local Culture

To truly immerse yourself in the charm of Corvallis, you must experience its unique local culture. This city has so much to offer, from its thriving art scene to its delicious cuisine.

Start your cultural journey by visiting The Arts Center, a creative hub in the Pacific Northwest. With rotating exhibitions, hands-on workshops, and galleries filled with dynamic contemporary art, this center is a must-see for any art lover.

Corvallis fosters a vibrant arts community, evidenced by the plethora of murals, stencils, and other street art scattered throughout the city. Among my favorites is “Maya” by Skye Walker on the Taco Vino building near 2nd Street and Monroe. I also love the red-tailed hawk wings by Alice Marshall. This was the first interactive mural in Corvallis and is still a popular photo spot. You can find the wings on 3rd Street between Madison and Jefferson.

In downtown’s Riverfront Commemorative Park, you’ll find even more street art. The murals reflect the area’s natural beauty and history, such as a mural depicting the valley’s mountains and rivers. As you wander through the park, watch for stenciled art and installations that pop up throughout the year.

Finally, remember to explore the side streets and alleyways, where you’ll discover street art in unexpected places. From vibrant and intricate murals to whimsical installations, Corvallis’ street art scene will surely delight and surprise you at every turn.

Then, as you wander through the streets exploring the art, take notice of the buildings and landmarks around you.

One must-visit spot is the Whiteside Theatre, a magnificent example of art deco architecture restored to its former glory. It now hosts various events and performances. The Corvallis-Benton County Public Library is another stunning building that offers a wealth of resources and boasts a special collection of local history and genealogy. Do take the time to walk inside. When I first entered the building almost a decade ago, I remember whispering, “Wow,” as I gazed at the wooden ceilings and comfortable reading areas.

Those interested in science and innovation should make their way to the historic Kerr Administration Building on the Oregon State University campus, which was once the center of groundbreaking research in nuclear energy and is now home to OSU’s Office of Admissions.

After exploring Corvallis’s scenic beauty, you’ll want to take a break and indulge in some of the city’s cozy cafes. With their quaint interiors, comfy seating, and delicious bites, these cafes are the perfect places to unwind and relax.

Savor Cozy Cafes

Locally owned Bodhi Artisan Kitchen and Bakery is an ideal breakfast, lunch, or coffee stop. Along with fresh-baked bread for you to take with you, you can order everything from quiche using Oregon’s own Tillamook cheese to organic steel-cut oats to an assortment of sandwiches. I had the avocado toast for breakfast, featuring a hearty helping of avocado. My sister opted for the Acai bowl that was topped with house-made granola. If you’re there for lunch, I recommend the Oregon tuna melt, made with Oregon Albacore tuna and Tillamook cheese, served on Bodhi’s sourdough.

Experience Fine Dining at del Alma

Del Alma Restaurant & Bar is a must-visit restaurant in Corvallis for those seeking a fine dining experience with an impressive wine selection. The ambiance is upscale yet cozy, making it the perfect spot for a special occasion or a date night. I’ve enjoyed eating at del Alma several times in the past. On my most recent visit, I stopped in for a glass of wine to soak up the ambiance.

The del Alma menu features Latin-inspired dishes that are expertly prepared and beautifully presented. And, of course, they have an impressive wine list. From classic options like chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon to more unique selections like gewürztraminer and tempranillo, there’s something to please every palate. Enjoy Southern-Inspired Cuisine and Wine at Castor

After indulging in the farm-to-table experience at Gathering Together Farm, it’s time to move on to Castor for a taste of Southern-inspired and locally sourced cuisine and more wine. Castor (Latin, French, and Spanish for beaver, the OSU mascot) is a cozy and intimate restaurant in downtown Corvallis, serving dishes that nod to Southern flavors but are created with French techniques. Everything is made with fresh and locally sourced ingredients.

The Castor menu features classic favorites like filet mignon, shrimp and grits, gumbo, and a delicious pork chop. My husband had the gumbo and enjoyed it. My sister opted for the pork chop, which was enough for several meals. I chose my favorite shrimp and grits and was not disappointed. The white cheddar North Carolina grits were cooked to perfection, and the shrimp were juicy, tender, and sweet.

What sets Castor apart is their impressive wine list, fresh cocktails, and selection of whiskeys. They have an extensive selection of local and international labels. Their knowledgeable staff can help you find the perfect wine to complement your meal or offer recommendations based on your preferences.

The result is a unique dining experience that gives a nod to the South using Oregon’s bounty. So sit back, relax, and savor the flavors while enjoying a glass of wine at Castor.

Head to Spain in the Heart of Downtown Corvallis at Corazón

After indulging in the flavorful cuisine at Castor, make your way to the newest wine bar in downtown Corvallis. Corazón (meaning heart in Spanish) is ideal for Corvallis (Latin for Heart of the Valley), sitting in the heart of Oregon’s wine country.

Corazón welcomes wine enthusiasts to sample wines from the Pacific Northwest and imports from Spain, Mexico, and elsewhere. The wine list changes every few weeks, so it’s always a treat to see what they’re pouring at Corazón.

Pair your wine with something from the restaurant’s small plates menu. They offer charcuterie boards, bread and olive oil, tinned fish, and some delicious desserts that pair perfectly with a glass of wine.
