Breezes Grand Negril in Jamaica has received the Condé Nast Traveler Readers Award for Best Resort and is a AAA 3-Diamond property for good reason. My room at the resort was a beach front junior suite with French doors that opened to a small patio, with the beach just a few steps away.

The suite was quite large with a king size bed, large bath, and dressing area, plus a step down to a living area with desk, sofa, and chair. There was a mini-refrigerator the staff kept well-stocked with sodas, beer, and wine. This is one of those places, though, where the room is made even better because of the location.
Breezes Grand Negril is an all-inclusive resort, meaning that all the food and drink (including premiums liquors and beers) is included, as well as most activities. I recommend the glass-bottom boat ride — it was great fun. The resort is spread across 22 acres of tropical gardens. There are several pools and hot tubs, 6 bars, multiple buffets and a la carte restaurants, including one with Jamaican food. I really enjoyed the Japanese restaurant. Oh, and I love the fresh fruit that was available everywhere.

The biggest draw at Negril is the beach. It is a wide sandy beach that gently slopes down toward the clear blue water. Chaise lounges sit scattered along the sand, waiting for you to claim one and wile away the afternoon. I discovered that even the October days in Jamaica are quite warm and there’s nothing I preferred more than taking a dip in the pool, reading and napping in a chaise, and walking along the shore.
I did, however, take advantage of the Blue Mahoe Spa while I was at Grand Negril. After a few minutes of relaxing by the hot tub under the thatch-roofed waiting area, my therapist greeted me and led me across to a small white-shuttered gazebo on the edge of the beach. There, to the backdrop of waves lapping at the banks, I had a relaxing one-hour massage.
By the time I returned to my room, I collapsed with the screen door open, listening to the ocean and smelling the salt air. I can totally understand why life seems to move slower in Jamaica.
