Olivespa: Arizona-based olive oil products for body and home

I first discovered olive oil-based skincare products about 15 years ago on my first trip to Provence. I was immediately in love with these soft, hydrating lotions, but I couldn't readily find them back home in the U.S. Although they are more common today, finding truly natural, organic olive oil products can still be a bit of a challenge. So, I was thrilled to discover Olivespa, a creation of Queen Creek Olive Mill right here in Arizona.

What is Olivespa?

Olivespa is an all-natural line of olive oil skincare products created and operated by Brenda Rea (mother of five and co-owner of Queen Creek Olive Mill) and her daughter Joanna (Joey) Rea.

While QCOM is a long-time favorite here in Arizona (producing the state's only extra virgin olive oil) and Brenda has been creating skincare products for family and friends for years, Olivespa is a relatively new venture, founded in 2013. The company recently sent me a sampling of some of their products to test and I am excited to share them with you.

Why Olive Oil in Skincare Products?

Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) is great for the skin, filled with antioxidants as well as Vitamins A, D, K and E. EVOO is great protection in today's harsh environment, especially here in the Southwest where we have very little humidity and skin can dry out quickly.

Olive oil is effective in many common skin disorders, including acne, eczema and even diaper rash. There is also evidence that olive oil can help protect your skin against the sun's harmful UV rays.

The Olivespa Products

Olivespa has a great array of skincare products, including lip balm, bath and body oil, body butter, salt scrub, hand salve, foot balm, lotion sticks, and shaving foam. Olivespa also offers a line of true Castile soaps made with olive oil and no chemical additives.

Depending on the actual Olivespa product, items contain such natural ingredients as EVOO, beeswax, shea butter, aloe butter, sea salt, and therapeutic grade essential oils. The products never contain parabens, phthalates, sulfates, formaldehyde, alcohol, mineral oil, or other chemical additives, making them ideal for anyone with allergies or sensitive skin.

The Products I Love

I received a lovely selection of products and chose a couple to try. I am in love with the lip balm. I received the pink grapefruit lip balm and I will be definitely be ordering more for myself—I want to try the tangerine, vanilla bean, and orange blossom. I love that the scent is very subtle and this is simply the smoothest lip balm I've ever used. And trust me, I go through a lot of lip balm given our dry Arizona climate.

The lip balm contains olive oil, beeswax, coconut oil, shea butter, and essential oils. Priced at $3.50 each, I think the lip balm is a great buy and will make ideal stocking stuffers.

I also sampled the orange blossom body butter. Again I love the subtle aroma—no overwhelming perfumes, which is important to me.

I was expecting a thinner consistency, so was surprised when I opened it and found it to be quite thick, almost the consistency of a salve. However, I really like it. I can use just a tiny amount, probably less than 1/8 teaspoon, to cover my hands and forearms, making the $20 price tag very reasonable. The best part is that it hydrates my skin without making it feel oily or greasy. I can use it and within less than a minute it has absorbed enough so that I can go back to typing or even using the touch screen on my phone without problems.

I agree. I’m a huge olive oil fan. I love this because there’s no perfume smells.
