Whether you book one of the many Mykonos villas or stay at a hotel in Corfu, there are many ways to see and experience all that Greece has to offer. Of course, you will need to sample the world-famous cuisine from this part of the world. Are you trying to eat like a local while on vacation in Greece? If so, check out the great tips below.

Research Restaurants Before You Leave

If you consider yourself a lover of food and drink, then researching the various restaurants in the part of Greece you are vacationing in is crucial. Most first-timers to this iconic country fail to realize just how many different restaurants there are to choose from. The restaurants in Greece range from high-class eateries to local seaside taverns. While you might think that sticking to high-class restaurants is the right move, the best spots are often the small, local bistros that are abundant around the islands.

Local food is something to research before your trip to Greece

Eating like a local means doing a bit of research to find those hidden gems. Luckily, there are many reviews online about local eateries in popular areas like Athens and Santorini. The last thing you want is to have a hungry family waiting for you to decide which restaurant will be best for your evening meal, so do this research in advance to be organized and stress-free on your vacation.

Don’t Be Afraid to Share

The manner in which you order food while in Greece will depend on the type of restaurant you are visiting. For instance, if you are in a local tavern, you don’t have to order an entrée for everyone in your party. The best way to truly sample what a local restaurant has to offer is by ordering a variety of their most popular appetizers. If you are dining with a larger party, get a few big salads and some different types of dip to share. Melitzanosalata and tzatziki are two of the most popular dip options you will find in Greece.

Don’t forget to sample the local fresh fish or seafood with your meal. The fish served in most Greek restaurants is usually smaller in size and either grilled or fried. You will also be provided with bread with your meal, which means even ordering only appetizers will be plenty filling for everyone at the table.

Consider Your Meal Times

Millions of people travel to Greece every year, but many people are unaware of the common customs in this country when it comes to eating. The meal times in Greece are a bit different than what you are probably used to in the United States. While touristy restaurants will serve lunch around noon, many local eateries won’t start serving lunch until later, usually around 1:30 p.m.

Dinnertime is also usually later in Greece. Most locals don’t eat dinner until around 9 p.m. and sometimes even later in the summer months to avoid the heat. If you want to truly eat like a local on your trip, you should try and adapt to these adjusted meal times. Eating dinner in a restaurant by yourself at 5:30 p.m. is not exactly experiencing Greece like a local, so try and do as the locals do and stay up late!
