Compare 6 of the best Maui car rental companies, from local family-run businesses to major airport brands, with options for every budget and travel style.

Maui is known for many things, but it’s not the most walkable place to visit when you’re on vacation. You’ll likely need a car, so it’s best to look at the car rental services available in the area. Unsurprisingly, many companies put their hands up and claim to be the best – but which ones are genuinely worth using?

We’ve looked at what’s available, and here is the definitive list of the best Maui car rental companies

#1 Frank’s Friendly Cars Maui Car Rental LLC (Best Overall)

Frank’s Friendly Cars Maui Car Rental LLC is probably the best car rental company that you’ve never heard of. While many of the other brands on this list are somewhat household names, this one is a local provider that’s been in action since 2006. Its local presence lets it provide more personal service, which is why it has amassed over 280 Google reviews and a 4.6-star rating. If you know anything about car rental companies, then you’ll know that’s an impressive rating!

The company has won multiple awards over the years for offering such a complete and diverse service, so you’re getting a really high-quality provider here. In terms of the cars available to rent, there’s a really good mixture of both brand-new and older cars. Expect competitive rates on the newest models with the latest technology, and more budget-friendly choices in the older range. You’re looking at modern EVs, sedans, family cars, pickup trucks, MPVs, and everything else you can think of.

It’s a truly complete service—and if you can’t decide what to rent, the company will happily take down your details and suggest a few options, which is a fantastic touch.

#2 Enterprise Rent-A-Car

The first of a few global brands on this list, Enterprise Rent-A-Car operates out of Kahului Airport and is surprisingly well rated. You get the benefit of choosing an established brand built on years of trust, which means the chances of being ripped off are extremely low. Enterprise typically has a really good stock of vehicles at this location, and it’s one of the best places to find newer models.

Alas, like all of the bigger brands here, that extra trust you get from being a premium brand means you pay a premium price. Expect some of the more expensive choices here, but if you want the added security of renting through a company like this, it might be worth it.

#3 SIXT

SIXT also operates straight from Kahului Airport and offers a similar service to Enterprise. The main difference is that SIXT tends to offer a slightly wider range of cars, though the prices are even higher. However, one reason many holidaygoers choose this car rental company in Maui is that it lets you select premium cars for your trip. There’s no need to worry about the quality of the vehicle, as you can literally choose one in the “premium” range, which ensures you get something very classy and modern.

#4 Makoa Rental Car Maui

Makoa Rental Car Maui is another local company that helps you find the ideal car for your stay. It has an extremely high number of positive reviews, with customers citing excellent customer service and extreme vehicle cleanliness as two of the biggest selling points. You’ll get pickup instructions sent straight to your phone, which makes booking much easier because you don’t have to worry about where to go or what to do.

There’s no deposit required on a lot of cars as well, and you’ll find some of the cheapest options out there. Unfortunately, cheap car rental always comes at a cost, and for this company it’s the age of the vehicles. There aren’t as many brand-new cars available here, and that means that you can still end up with a car that’s five years old if you’ve picked a “new car” option. Not ideal, but certainly not a dealbreaker either.

#5 MauiCarRental.com

At MauiCarRental.com, you’re renting a car from a family-owned business that’s been in operation since 1999. That makes it one of the longest-standing car rental services in the area, not counting the more prestigious brands. You can choose from a modest fleet, including Jeeps, compact cars, economy cars, minivans, convertibles, and premium options.

Reviews are generally good across the board, though some customers reported that contacting the company can be difficult, especially if you arrive late at night or have a flight delay.

#6 Kihei Rent A Car

Kihei Rent A Car is a proudly family-run Maui rent-a-car business that’s conveniently located on the south shore. Once again, you get the usual service from this provider, including flexible rates on a range of cars in its fleet. It isn’t the biggest company on the island, so don’t expect to see as many vehicles as you would with some of the others on this list.

What’s more, it buys many of its cars used, so you won’t find many new ones here. The obvious upside to this is that it can offer substantially lower rates than almost anyone else. So, if you’re looking for a true budget-friendly option, this could be the one for you. Unfortunately, it isn’t based at the main airport, though it does offer a shuttle bus service to take you straight to its office.

Choosing the Best Maui Rental Car for Your Trip

Maui is a gorgeous place to enjoy a luxurious Hawaiian escape, and any of the car rental services above will serve you well. Frank’s Friendly Cars Maui Car Rental LLC takes the number one spot because it delivers a premium experience from a local company. You feel like you’re dealing with one of the bigger global brands because of the sheer variety of cars – and the inclusion of brand-new models—yet it retains that local company customer service you’ll always appreciate.

The final decision is always in your hands, so take a closer look at your options before booking your car rental service.
