There are more great Arizona summer staycation deals than there are triple-digit days here in Arizona. Well, maybe not quite, but those great deals help the hot summer days melt away. I continue my roundup of my favorite Arizona staycations today with Kimpton Hotel Palomar in Downtown Phoenix.
Kimpton Hotel Palomar, Phoenix
Named one of the best hotel rooftop bars by USA Today and Travel + Leisure, LUSTRE Rooftop Bar in Downtown Phoenix plans to keep things cool this summer with events nearly every night of the week, all summer long with its “100 Days of Summer” event series along with discounted stays at Kimpton Hotel Palomar Phoenix. I was at Hotel Palomar this weekend and it was such a fun stay right in the heart of downtown Phoenix.
Perched on the third-floor pool deck of Hotel Palomar Phoenix, LUSTRE is an oasis in the heart of Downtown Phoenix with a pool and cabanas that offer sweeping views of the city skyline, craft cocktails, an energetic vibe and seasonal menu items perfect for enjoying poolside. By the afternoon, the heat of the sun was blocked by the building, so we sat on comfy sofas with a light breeze blowing as we sipped margaritas and nibbled on chips and guacamole.
During the 100 Days of Summer, there are a ton of events running Memorial Day through Labor Day, including:
- Mondays are Industry Appreciation Days
- Pool opens at noon
- Happy hour all day for anyone with a valid industry ID or business card
- Sutra Yoga Series on Thursdays
- Classes 7 to 8 pm
- Dj spins music during the yoga class to go along with weekly themes, including 80s remix, starry night, 90s hip hop, meditation, reggae, and candlelight yoga
- Saturdays and Sunday Live at LUSTRE
- Pool opens at 11 am
- Live bands and DJs will entertain guests on Saturdays from 2 to 6 pm and 8 pm until midnight and on Sundays from 2 to 6 pm
- Event is free and open to the public

During your stay at Hotel Palomar, be sure to stop by Blue Hound Kitchen & Cocktails, on the hotel's second floor, for a meal to remember. My husband and I had dinner there and it was filled with such great flavors. Everything was a little bit familiar, a little bit comfortable, but also edgy, distinct, and different. That is a rare rare combination for a chef to pull off and Chef Sean Currid does it remarkably well.
My husband had one of the “low down & dirty” cocktails, the Lawless. The waiter brought the drink out in a separate carafe—a blend of Four Roses bourbon, “truck stop” bitters, and wormwood liqueur. He also brought out a glass that was upside down and filled with tobacco smoke. At the table, he turned the glass over and poured in the amber liquid as the steam wafted out. I grew up on a tobacco farm in Virginia and the smell of tobacco is a part of my soul. That drink took me back a few decades with the aroma. The taste was very smooth as well.
Another memory-filled moment was when I bit into the deviled eggs. I've always said no one makes deviled eggs like my mother (those Southern roots again). These weren't like my mother's, but had enough of that old school feel that it made me nostalgic. But tucked under the creamy yolk was a bacon jam to die for.
I enjoyed the chop salad that was almost too beautiful to eat. But, I'm glad I did because it was filled with amazing flavors of the desert, from pepitas and dried corn to cotija cheese and fresh avocado.
My main course was the hot game hen, a crispy Cornish game hen with a sweet and sour sauce that had just enough heat to make it full of flavor. It was served with crispy Romanesco, charred eggplant and pickles.
