Discover the most stunning spring travel destinations in Europe, from Spain’s vibrant cities to Ireland’s green trails and Switzerland’s alpine views.

Traveling in spring is not as common as during the summer holidays, but there are several advantages to it. The first is that you don’t have to deal with huge crowds and elevated prices, but there’s also the fact that the weather tends to be pleasant, neither too hot nor too cold, so that you can spend more time exploring the outdoors and landmarks. If you want to take a trip next spring but you’re not yet sure which destination would be a good idea, you need to decide as quickly as possible to book your reservations and plan an itinerary.

Here are some areas and regions you should definitely consider for spring travel.

Spain

Spring is a very vibrant time in Spain, full of festivals and with blooming flowers and trees on all sides. The country is popular among digital nomads, so if you plan to travel for a longer time and will have to work for a few days, rest assured that you’ll have the perfect amenities to rely on. High-speed internet is commonplace, and there are numerous co-working spaces, especially in cities such as Barcelona and Valencia. Diverse co-living options are readily available as well. However, make sure your devices are protected with strong passcodes, and consider installing a trusted password manager on your computer to manage them. Don’t use insecure networks either.

However, after you’re done with work, it is definitely time to have some fun, and you can be sure that Spain will deliver. Córdoba is a favorite destination for many, a place where several cultures have coexisted for generations. Walk through the cobbled streets to discover everything this stunning city has to offer, such as the local flamenco museum, the Mosque–Cathedral of Córdoba, a major historic monument and UNESCO World Heritage Site since the 1980s, the Judería de Córdoba, where Jewish people lived between the 10th and 15th centuries, and the numerous floral patios. And since you’re in Córdoba, you should definitely try some of the local foods as well.

Salmorejo is a local delicacy, a traditional, thick tomato soup served with diced Jamón ibérico and chopped hard-boiled eggs. Rabo de toro is an oxtail stew made with a combination of garlic, shallots, olive oil, paprika, tomatoes, red wine, bay leaves, sherry, parsley, and, of course, oxtail. There are many variations of this recipe, with every restaurant having its own version. Berenjenas con miel de caña is a unique dish made with eggplants, molasses, salt, olive oil, and flour, typically enjoyed as a light snack. If you’re a fan of gazpacho, you should definitely consider getting a bowl of ajoblanco, another cold soup but made with bread, garlic, almonds, and vinegar, and generally served with grapes or melon slices.

Switzerland

Swiss landscapes are among the most cinematic in the world, ranging from towering peaks to rolling verdant hills and incredibly beautiful cities and towns that have retained their historical charm. During spring, you’ll get to enjoy the best of both worlds when it comes to the weather, as while it can be a little chilly early on, the valleys begin to bloom as it gets increasingly sunnier. Periods of rain and wintry weather are still common, especially in March and April, when light snow can fall. Make sure to pack warm clothes, especially if you plan to do a lot of walking and hiking.

Most high elevation trails and mountain resorts are closed until June, but there are plenty of lower elevation spots, lakes, and rivers that you could visit. Ebenalp Wildkirchli is one of the first areas you’ll find open for hiking, an easy quarter of an hour’s walk that leads to a cliff restaurant with an incredible view of the surrounding area. However, if you want a longer journey, you can hike to the nearby alpine lake. The Sattel Panorama Trail is one of the few mountain trails to open early because of its relatively low elevation.

The trail will take you on a walk around the hills and provide you with a perfect view of the mountains that will surround you on all sides. If you’re traveling with your children, you should know that there’s an entertainment spot at the top of the cable car that offers alpine slides, trampolines, and bouncy castles. The Swiss Path, a 35-kilometer (21.75 miles) hiking trail created in 1991 to mark the seven-century anniversary of the Federal Charter of 1291, is divided into different sections, and there’s public transportation at the junctures.

Ireland

If you want to get your fill of vibrant green landscapes on all sides, you need to travel to Ireland. Daffodils and bluebells are in bloom, and there are no crowds, but the towns are lively. Several walking trails are available in Ireland during the spring, and it would honestly be a pity not to join them given how beautiful the scenery is. The Wicklow Way is one of them, a long-distance trail that crosses the Wicklow Mountains and stretches 131 kilometers (81.4 miles). It starts from the suburban public Marlay Park in Dublin’s southern suburbs, through County Wicklow, and ends in Clonegal, a village located in County Carlow.

It takes about a week to complete the whole trail, which follows mountain paths, forest tracks, country roads, and boreens. The Dingle Way, called Slí Chorca Dhuibhne in Irish, is even longer at 162 kilometers (just over 100 miles), a circular route that begins and ends in Tralee, the county town of County Kerry in the southwest. The final stages of the hike will take you close to the coastline, and you’ll also get to visit Brandon village, where an ancient Celtic harvest festival called Féile Lughnasa still takes place every year.

Spring is the season when puffins return to Ireland, so if you enjoy birdwatching, drop by coastal cliffs like Skellig Michael in March or April. And since you’re in Ireland in spring, you must definitely attend a St Patrick’s Day parade. The one in Dublin can get quite crowded, though, so if you’re not a fan of that, you should try Galway and even Mullingar.
