Tempe has so much to offer those looking for a good meal and great entertainment. Restaurants, night clubs, concert venues and shopping all within walking distance makes Mill Avenue a bustling hub in this Arizona college town. Now, with the opening of Dierks Bentley’s Whiskey Row it has added yet another jewel to the avenue.
According to Ryan Hibbert, CEO of Riot Hospitality Group “Whiskey Row Tempe will be a place for the local community to connect and celebrate the cornerstones of our restaurant culture – unparalleled food and drinks, design, service and entertainment.” Dierks Bentley’s Whiskey Row opened their second location in mid-September at 6th Street and Mill Avenue and it hits the trifecta of a good night out square on the head.
Country music star and Arizona native Deirks Bentley isn’t just a name on a building. According to Mike Troyan, president of Riot Hospitality Group, Deirks is actively involved with this project. Creating a first of its kind experience for patrons is important to the RHG team and Dierks.
This collaboration resulted in the creation of a venue for live music that can expand to accommodate block parties or stay intimate for local acts. To do this, every window in the building rolls up to the patios, creating a bright and airy indoor/outdoor space that is truly designed for a party. To accommodate big crowds that acts like Dierks might attract, even the patio rails can move to expand the patio space and turn it into a block party.
The dance floor is perfect for some 2 stepping and there are plenty of tables and booths for groups to get together and watch the ASU Sun Devils play on one of the 55-inch big screen televisions. One of the things that truly struck me was the acoustics. I could easily have a conversation while a game played. The attention to how sound carries truly sets this joint apart, taking it from a place that bands play to a full-fledged music venue.
Whiskey Row is also serving up delicious “American Gastropub” on their menu. Chef Samantha Roberts is daring with her combinations of new and old flavors. She ensures everything is of the highest quality by running “from scratch” kitchens. By purchasing all their baked goods from local bakeries, the kitchen ensures freshness while keeping the community involved. By taking old favorites and creating something that pops, Chef Samantha Roberts ensures a great meal while enjoying a drink with the game or while listening to the band rock.
Take, for example, her interpretation of chicken and waffles are a perfect dinner fare. The waffles are redesigned with white cheddar and green tomatoes making a fluffy, savory Southern taste that compliments the perfectly fried chicken breasts while the bacon honey and pickled jalapeños on top bring it home to the West. The menu holds tried and true favorites like the Whiskey Burger 13 and awesome dinner salads, but I would seriously recommend exploring with the phenomenal Pretzel Turkey Melt.
A good night out always has a few good drinks and Whiskey Row is serving up 50 beers and four signature cocktails on tap. I tried a few of the signature drinks and hands down my favorites were the French 75 and Dierk’s Old Fashioned. The French 75 is a dry white wine and gin with simple syrup; a classy drink that tickles your taste buds and will get anyone on the dance floor. I, personally, love a good bourbon cocktail and Dierk’s Old Fashioned went down smooth and rich leaving you relaxed, ready for anything the night delivers.
Whiskey Row is authentic and genuine from top to bottom. Dierks and the RHG team hav created a place combining rustic old school country music hall charm with food that satisfies the taste buds and doesn’t cut a single corner in the presentation. Maddy, our waitress on opening night, puts it best, “I honestly love my job. I love to go to work. It is like a family here.” I can honestly agree. Whiskey Row is a welcoming place with plenty of choices on the menu. The Happy Hour is Monday through Friday from 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Whiskey Row also includes interactive entertainment complete with live music, country DJs and a “back-porch” featuring corn hole, ping pong, beer pong, foosball and shuffleboard.
