Fredericksburg, Texas sits in the Texas Hill Country, 70 miles north of San Antonio. The above photo was taken in early April 2013 at Wildseed Farms, just as the wildflowers started to bloom.

Wildseed Farms, known across the country for its top quality wildflower seeds sold via a gorgeous full-color catalog, fills more than 1,000 acres in Fredericksburg with bright blooms. The farm is so much more than a farm, however. It has a great retail shop (I always buy something unique there), garden center with fun things for your yard (good thing I don’t live closer or I’d spend all my money there), Brewbonnet Biergarten restaurant with some tasty pulled pork barbecue, and walking paths through the flowers. Wildseed Farms welcomes more than 350,000 visitors each year who come to snap photos of the flowers and pick out packets of seed for their own gardens.

You can go online to order seeds customized for your climate or take a peek at their fields in bloom. When you visit Fredericksburg, be sure to set aside a couple of hours to explore Wildseed Farms, located about 7 miles east of town on Highway 290. Call 800.848.0078 for more information or visit online at www.wildseedfarms.com.

What a GORGEOUS photo, Susan. You’re so lucky. Both times I was in Fredericksburg the wildflower gardens were not blooming. If you want to see another place for wildflowers (not a commercial seed growing place) try to get to Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve in Pennsylvania. It is near the place where New Jersey and Delaware meet PA, and is loaded with Revolutionary War history as a bonus.

The first time I was in Fredericksburg, it was much more in bloom than this time – and there were many more butterflies. I’ll have to try to get to the place in Pennsylvania. I love wildflowers – and history. Sounds perfect.
