On the sixth day of Christmas, I sipped a Cacao Old Fashioned, courtesy of The County Line Bar-B-Q in San Antonio. Never fear if you’re not in San Antonio. Garrett Stephens, Assistant General Manager/Pitmaster/Chef/Mixologist shares the recipe for you. Stephens welcomes you to give it a try—and then stop by The County Line Bar-B-Q the next time you visit San Antonio.

Creating the Cacao Old Fashioned

As Stephens likes to say, cocktails are “a fun and boozy approach” to the holidays. This one has all of those flavors of the holidays—Brandy-spiced Oregon cherries (made in-house at The County Line, but you can get creative), orange, and Bittermens Xocolatl Mole Bitters, which blends cacao, cinnamon, and spice. With some cacao-infused Michter’s Kentucky Rye, it’s an ode to an American Christmas. If you prefer to stop into The County Line at 4334 Hyatt Place Drive on I-10, you can order the Cacao Old Fashioned for $12.

Ingredients
Directions
  1. In a bar shaker, muddle the orange and brandy-spiced cherry.
  2. Add the rye, gum syrup, and mole bitters.
  3. Add ice to the shaker and stir approximately 10 seconds.
  4. Place a large block of ice in an old-fashioned glass, and then strain cocktail over ice.
  5. Garnish with orange peel and spiced cherry.
