Yesterday and today both feature cocktails you can make in bigger batches, ideal for your Christmas party or family gathering. Today, on the 12th day of Christmas Cocktails, I sip a Viking Glogg thanks to Highland Park Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

What is Glögg?

Glögg is the Swedish version of mulled wine. While we often called any mulled wine glögg, the Swedish version features wine and an assortment of other liquors, including the country's favorite aquavit. This version is not a true glögg or even a mulled wine, but delicious nonetheless with Highland Park Magnus. This delicious recipe was created by Lauren MacDougall, Beverage Director at Great Northern Food Hall inside Grand Central Station in New York City.

Creating the Viking Glögg

This is a great drink to make for your Christmas parties. you can make the fruit mix ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator until you use it. Once you've made the glögg, you can store it in the refrigerator, and then reheat it and strain before serving.

Ingredients
  • 1 liter apple juice
  • 1½ cup (12 oz) Highland Park Magnus
  • 4 TBSP dark brown sugar
  • Peels of two oranges
  • 6 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 TBSP golden raisins
  • 2 TBSP slivered blanched almonds
  • 2 TBSP fresh grated ginger
  • 2 TBSP cloves
  • 2 TBSP star anise
  • 2 TBSP allspice
  • 2 TBSP black peppercorns
Directions
  1. Bring all ingredients to a low boil for 15 minutes to bring out the spices.
  2. Strain.
  3. Serve in a mug with a scoop of fruit mix (recipe below).

  • 3 oz Highland Park Magnus
  • 2 TBSP slivered blanched almonds
  • 2 TBSP golden raisins
