I don’t usually go to the movies anymore because it’s cheaper to watch what’s on Netflix, I don’t have to silence my phone, and the floor isn’t sticky at home. But, Flix Brewhouse in Chandler has changed my mind about what the movie-going experience can (and should) be.

Part of Overstreet Chandler, a new retail, dining, and entertainment complex just south of the Chandler Performing Arts Center, the recently opened Flix Brewhouse features nine screens showing first-run movies, a gastropub, and an in-house brewery. It’s the brewery that really sets Flix Brewhouse apart from other dine-in theaters.

Gastro Brewpub

As you enter, Flix Brewhouse look more like a brewpub than a movie theater. To the right of the door, brew tanks stand neatly behind glass; above the bar, on a second level, there’s even more. Mounted TVs broadcast the latest sports throughout, and there’s a patio off to the right with cornhole, a fire element surrounded by seating, and shaded tables for outdoor dining.

If you ignored the touchscreens for ordering movie tickets at the entrance and the box office near the back, you could almost forget this Texas-based chain even showed movies. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Flix Brewhouse welcomes people to come in just for a meal or simply to sample its brews. You don’t have to purchase movie tickets.

On the menu, you’ll find typical pub grub fare—pizza, burgers, sandwiches, wraps, and salads—with a few surprises like Hawaiian tuna poke and a charcuterie board. There’s also a kids menu, and on Saturday and Sunday, you can order brunch items—pancakes, eggs, waffles and more—until 1:30 p.m.

The Beer at Flix Brewhouse Chandler

While the food is good, the beer is even better. All seven Flix Brewhouse locations throughout the country serve six core beers: 10 Day Scottish Ale, Flix Golden Ale, Luna Rosa Wit, Umbra Chocostout, Lupulus IPA and Satellite Red Ale. These are brewed in-house by Chandler’s head brewer, Marisa Bernal.

Bernal also creates exclusive beers for the Chandler location, so at any given time, there could be up to 12 Flix Brewhouse Chandler selections, brewed onsite, flowing from the taps. Additional taps feature another two dozen local and regional craft beers. The Flix beers cost $5 to $6 per pint; the others cost slightly more.

In addition to beer, the bar serves wine and craft cocktails. You can order anything from the bar in the restaurant or once you’re seated in the theater.

The Theaters at Flix Brewhouse Chandler

The configuration of each of the nine theaters varies slightly in the number and types of seats (some recline, some don’t), but the leather seats are all extra wide and extra comfy. They feel more like your recliner at home than the typical movie theater seat.

Needless to say, the technology is all state-of-the-art, too. The theaters boast 360-degree, immersive Dolby Atmos sound technology, ultra-high resolution 4K projection and a 60-foot wide, super low distortion, HD parabolic silver screen. I don’t know much about that stuff, but the movie I saw looked and sounded incredible.

The Overall Experience at Flix Brewhouse Chandler

You can purchase tickets online before you go or when you arrive. Either way, you’ll get the opportunity to select your seats. Although you can order a beer, meal or both before your movie starts, I recommend dining during the movie.

Staff, moving through the theater, will greet you soon after you take your seat asking if you’d like anything to drink and if you’ll be ordering something to eat. Chances are both your food and drink will arrive before the movie starts, but if not, you’ll hardly notice these “service ninjas” delivering your items.

If you decide to order something after the movie starts, simply write your order on the form and press the call menu. A staff member will pick your order up and deliver your items stealthily. Roughly 30 to 40 minutes before the end of the movie, your bill will be dropped off. (An 18 percent tip will be automatically added.)
