I always wanted to try one of the new smartwatches, so when Best Buy offered to send me a Michael Kors Access Runway Smartwatch to sample, I was thrilled. Having everything available at my fingertips appealed to the obsessive planner in me. The Michael Kors smartwatch, which pairs with the Google Assistant and Google’s Wear OS, helps you stay punctual and fashionable.
Fashion Forward with Michael Kors Access Runway Smartwatch
The Michael Kors Smartwatch is available in both gold and rose gold. I received the gold watch and it was much lighter weight than I had expected.
The watch is a pretty gold tone with an 18mm stainless steel watch band. The rose gold watch is available with a pink silicone band. The round 42mm case is big but not too chunky. I quickly discovered that the face is completely customizable. Of course, since it’s the holidays, I chose a chose a fun snowman scene. And the snow actually moves on the watch face.
There are a number of faces, each customizable, included in the initial software and there are so many companies offering downloadable faces. The 1.19” AMOLED touch-screen display is easy to use, letting you touch, tap, and swipe for easy menu navigation.
The watch is a pretty accessory and in true Michael Kors style, it is classy and fashion-forward. The watch shipped with an extra link and it is easy to remove links to make the watch smaller. It is water-resistant in up to 98 feet of water.
I started the watch and paired it with my phone. It uses Bluetooth 4.1 LE connectivity and NFC technology enables one-touch pairing. I was a little worried because I have an Apple iPhone and the watch uses Google Wear OS. However, it paired right away, and I was able to get started checking things out. I did have to update the watch’s operating system and that took a little time. The Michael Kors Access Runway is compatible with phones running Android 4.4 or later or iOS 9.3 or later.
Perhaps the best app on the watch is Smarter Health Coaching from Google Fit. Google Fit has two new trackers in its app: Heart Points and Move Minutes. Both were designed in partnership with the American Heart Association and the World Health Organization. These metrics measure activity intensity, and the watch offers smarter health coaching, which helps you stay on track with your daily fitness goals.
There is also proactive help from Google Assistant. You can view upcoming flight information, dinner reservations, appointments, and the weather forecast. It is nice that I can pair it with my Bluetooth headset and play music via Pandora. I also downloaded the Uber app so I can book a ride from my watch.
I love the quick access to Google Pay. Once you add your credit card—and a security code or pattern—you can swipe your watch at Google Pay terminals to instantly pay for a purchase.
One of my favorite features is that it will ring your phone if you’ve forgotten where you put your phone. How many times I’ve put my phone down somewhere in the house and can’t find it – and now my smartwatch will ring it for me.
Using the Smartwatch
I have used the Smartwatch for about ten days now. There’s a lot about it I like and if you’re looking for a way to make every minute matter, get health coaching, and stay on time and target, then a Smartwatch makes sense. I love the Michael Kors Access Runway Smartwatch because it’s fashionable and adds to my wardrobe. I would probably prefer the rose gold version over the gold.
I love that it syncs with my calendar, SMS text messages, and email. It notifies you when you receive any of those, or a phone call, by vibrating. However, I did find the constant vibration was a problem (I get hundreds of emails a day) and ended up turning off the notifications during dinners and meetings because I found it too distracting. I love that it tracks my heart rate, my steps, and my activities. I also really enjoy having my calendar, with the next appointment, literally available at the flick of a wrist.
The watch is great for travel because you can display the current time and the time in another zone with one of the optional faces. You can also keep the flight schedule handy and connect to both Bluetooth and WiFi.
For me, the negatives are that there is a slight but constant heat on my wrist from the battery. The specs all indicate that you can get 24 hours of use out of a full charge, but I’ve not been able to get more than about eight hours on a charge. The charger uses the watch’s built-in NFC technology – so it’s a small disk, about the size of a quarter, that sits on the back of the watch. The charger has a USB connection, so I can charge it with my iPhone charger or my computer.
