Phoenix is a beautiful city—easy to navigate, delightful weather all winter long, usually clear skies and even when it isn’t, the storms are breathtaking. Phoenix is also a city with a long history of agriculture. Which leads us to some amazing food. Arizona is filled with exceptional talent and hidden gem restaurants. I recently had a chance to explore the unique combination of historic space and modern American cuisine at Pomelo.

Surrounded by the Past at Pomelo

Pomelo is located in the heart of Phoenix on 12th  Street just north of Glendale Avenue. Serving up American classics using fresh, homegrown ingredients from local suppliers, Ken and Lucia Schnitzer, along with Jerry Mansoor, looked to create a friendly restaurant that is knitted into the community. Located next door to Luci’s Urban Concepts, which embraces healthy, local and sustainable options, and Luci’s at the Orchard, Pomelo is a careful balance between modern and classic.

Built around the original 1920’s territorial home, the restaurant is a nod to the history of the area while expanding into bright airy dining rooms. I loved the antique whiskey bottles from Ken’s father’s collection in the front room where we sat.

Flavors from Today at Pomelo

Lunch started with a delightful cocktail that was just right to kick off summer. Long Walks on the Peach combined the sweet flavors of peach liqueur and the smoky smoothness of scotch. We also grabbed an order of Calamari and Shrimp Fritti. Lightly battered and served with Pomodoro sauce and a buttermilk dressing, the calamari and the shrimp were extremely tasty.

For lunch, we had to go with a pizza. All of Pomelo’s pizzas are hand stretched and wood-fired. The mushroom pizza was extremely good. It was a combination of mozzarella, mushrooms, garlic cream, caramelized onions, arugula and drizzled with a balsamic reduction. This pie was perfect for an evening out with a bottle of wine and big belly laughs with friends. Speaking of pizza and wine, Pomelo offers a $25 Pizza and Bottle of wine special! Monday and Tuesday guests can choose any Pomelo’s pizza and one of their listed bottles. It is a great way to blow off steam at the beginning of the week.

Great Food for all Guests

We also ordered a salad to check out a gluten-free offering and we were not disappointed at all. Salad can be hit or miss and Pomelo absolutely hit it out of the park. The Beet Salad is enormous and creates a balance of flavor without anything getting overpowered. The salad is roasted beets, field greens, cubes of avocado, pecans, herbed goat cheese and a lemon vinaigrette. You can always add salmon, bacon, chicken or even ribeye, but to be honest with you, this salad can stand completely on its own.

Pomelo is located at 7100 N. 12th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85020 and is open for lunch and dinner Monday through Sunday. They have extended hours on Friday and Saturday and they also offer a brunch on Saturday and Sunday. You can make reservations and see a full menu on their website.

Pomelo is a gorgeous retreat right in the heart of Phoenix with a patio that is shaded by the some of the citrus trees that were in the original orchard. Pomelo is a great restaurant featuring a wine cellar, great food, and staffed by genuine people.
