I love this hotel and resort. I love the vibe, the lack of pretension, the ease of living and its history. The low-slung, understated original Flamingo Hotel wraps around its amazing huge, glamorous swimming pool, the undisputed focus of this historic mid-century property, now the Flamingo Conference Resort and Spa.
Flamingo Hotel History, Hollywood and Hipness
The pool is a classic gigantic L-shaped pool; deep with plenty of room for those who want to swim laps, those who dive and those who just want to splash and look good. They just don’t make pools like this anymore. When I look at this pool, I ponder its past and dream about all of the celebrities and dignitaries that have swum laps or simply graced her concrete edges, lounging on one of the many chaises.
Jayne Mansfield gladly posed next to the Flamingo’s pool, laughing at the camera in a revealing, very small two-piece with one hand behind her head buried in blonde locks. In the lobby, a photo of Jayne graces the history wall.
Enter Another World at The Flamingo Conference Resort and Spa
The Flamingo, as the locals call it, beckons with its multi-story entrance tower and neon sign that proudly spells out FLAMINGO vertically right over the doors to its understated lobby. The Flamingo is a hotel that has seen countless weddings, parties, business events, meetings, conventions and family reunions. It’s a comfortable place with a huge parking lot, intimate spaces and very good food. A family can stay here, lovers can rendezvous or executives can business-meet, all feeling indulged.
It is a part of Santa Rosa history, both the city’s ups and downs. In fact, several families displaced by the wildfires in October 2017 were at the Flamingo for months as they sought new housing.
The Flamingo’s rooms are spacious with mid-century style furnishings. Sleek and simple yet comfortable and complete describes the look.
Most rooms face the pool and many have balconies or patios. Mine was a second story suite that allowed me to gaze, even from my king size bed, at the pool night and day as it glittered and beckoned swimmers. There was an aqua aerobics class, happy kids and hotel guests getting a bit of exercise. Don’t forget your suit or trunks when checking into The Flamingo!
Fine Dining, Poolside Fun and Salsa
The Flamingo’s Terrace Grill is its primary restaurant with a full range of dining options and decent wine list, this being wine country. Dining by the pool either during the day or in the evening is far and away the best way to enjoy the restaurant. Dining a bit later or having a drink under the stars is unforgettable in this part of the world. The stars shine bright far away from a major city. Offerings include wine country fare, steaks and seafood and many room rates include a continental breakfast buffet to start the day.
On weekends The Terrace Grill hosts a sumptuous champagne brunch (really cheap sparkling wine that pairs well with orange juice!) with a great array of breakfast favorites including huge chilled shrimp and smoked salmon as well as many salads and a huge array of desserts. At less than $32, it is a steal for an all-you-can-eat brunch.
The Flamingo is owned by the vintner of the Napa Valley Ehret Wines and their array of wines is available to taste on site.
The entertainment starts at the hotel’s lounge, known for its live entertainment every weekend. And then the party moves outside to the pool in the summer. On Thursdays and Sundays, it’s salsa dancing, wildly popular, with lessons and then hours of dancing for a $10 cover. I was there on a Sunday and the place was packed with all ages and skill levels, all enjoying some vibrant salsa.
After a night of salsa, the Flamingo’s spa and fitness center may be the best retreat. With an additional pool, tennis courts and 10,000 square feet of gym area, this is the perfect place for a yoga or pilates class or a visit to the spa. I have had facials here many times and I can vouch that the estheticians at The Flamingo are some of the best in the business, use the top products and deliver outstanding services. whether to a hotel guest or visitor.

The Flamingo Hotel is a beautiful mid-century modern hotel with history and bouts of glamour while staying true to its role of a hotel at the center of the small metropolis of Santa Rosa.
