The Sixth Annual Arcadia Family Fun Run, a 5k run benefiting research into Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), is set to take place on Sunday, April 22nd at 8 a.m.
The event is being organized by Katie and Mark Cosmas, whose five-month-old daughter, Taylor, passed away in April of 2010.
“Losing a child to SIDS puts you in a club that no one hopes to ever join,” said Katie Cosmas. “So our goal is to make sure that no parent has to go through what we went through, and that every baby lives to see their first birthday.”
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is the number one cause of death in infants one month to one year of age.
The Cosmas family established the running event and created “Team Taylor” which has raised nearly $600,000 to date. The fundraising goal this year is $160,000. More than 1,200 runners of all ages and skill levels are expected to participate in this year’s 5k Fun Run and will be spreading the word using #endSIDS on all social media.
The race begins at 48th Street just north of Indian School Road at the canal.
“We’ve been overwhelmed with the support of our friends, neighbors and the entire community, which has allowed us to see a brighter tomorrow,” said Mark Cosmas.
In 2012, the couple welcomed a baby boy, Cade, who is now six years old and in 2016 a baby girl, Addison.
Registration for the April 22nd event is open online at TeamTaylorAZ.com. Runners can also sign up the day of on-site at iRun.
All proceeds from the Sixth Annual Arcadia Family Fun Run will be donated to Boston Children’s Hospital, which supports researchers under Robert’s Program, a group whose research has led to the most promising development of our knowledge on SIDS and the involvement of the neurotransmitter Serotonin and Phoenix Children’s Hospital Cribs for Kids.
Event sponsors include MJ Insurance, Capital Group, iRun, iHeartMedia, Courtesy Chevrolet, Modern Acupuncture, Blue Sky Parking, Ryan Companies, Arizona Sports, Pacific Mobile Diagnostics, Dunn Orthodontics, Talking Stick Resort, Stuckey Insurance, Foothills Rehab, Clayton Flooring, Copper State Bolt & Nut, Bay Equity Home Loans.

About Boston Children’s Hospital SIDS Research and Robert’s Program
Boston’s Children’s Robert’s Program team recently has made new and exciting discoveries. Led by Director Richard Goldstein, MD, Associate Director Hannah Kinney, MD, and Dr. Robin Haynes, the team has: 1) Discovered SUDP-related brain abnormalities visible under a regular microscope 2) Developed an SUDP genetic panel 3) Discovered a possible SIDS screening tool: abnormal serotonin levels in infants’ blood serum 4) Found additional evidence of biological basis of SUDP (including SIDS).
