For years now the Art Basel at Miami Beach, one of the world’s most prestigious art shows, has attracted hundreds of private jets to the region, spreading all around the different executive and international airports in the area. Not quite there yet in numbers compared to the likes of the Super Bowl—an event that attracted almost 1,200 private jets last year at Houston—Art Basel is expected to draw close to 900 aircraft when it arrives in Miami from 7-10 December 2017.

Art Basel will attract about 900 aircraft to Miami during December

From Pablo Picasso to today’s cutting-edge artists, Art Basel unites global collectors willing to pay top dollars for artwork. Local private jet operators such as Monarch Air Group of Fort Lauderdale have experienced an increase in flights weeks before and after the event, with a specific increase in bookings from New York. These unique and determined travelers not only boost jet rentals to South Florida, but also invest heavily in five-star hospitality and cuisine throughout the duration of the contemporary art fair.

With almost 75,000 visitors yearly, the event exhibits the work of thousands of artists all over the globe, thus generating the interest of private jet travel of hundreds of overseas art seekers. For instance, during the 2016 edition, almost half of jet rentals registered by Monarch Air Group during the first week of December were flights from Paris and London to South Florida. This year, the company projects similar figures.

South Florida, the Private Jet Hub of the Americas

Dubai, Cannes, New York, Nice and Paris. We’ve all heard of them and the impressive number of annual flights they register. The Paris Le Bourget airport alone, registered more than 50,000 movements last year. London has four private-jet equipped airports (London Luton and London Farnborough leading the way) that account for almost 84,000 total movements in a year.

In other words, the aforementioned are far busier than the likes of Fort Lauderdale International or Miami International Airport. So how can South Florida compete to attract top worldwide private jet travelers? It’s a mix of variables. “Hotels, restaurants, events like the Art Basel and the beaches play a major role”, explains David Gitman, Executive Director of Monarch Air Group of Fort Lauderdale.

“Business opportunities, top-notch hospitality, great cuisine and nightlife make South Florida an established hub within the Americas, as well as the go-to destination for private jet travelers across the globe. A wide array of executive airports also help the cause; Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International, Fort Lauderdale Executive, Miami-Opa Locka and Miami Executive join the list. South Florida, the “playground” for the top 1%, keeps these airports packed all year long,” concludes Gitman.
