Kassandra is the first finger in Halkidiki, Greece. Known for its crystal clear beaches and small beach towns, it is the closest of three peninsulas to the city of Thessaloniki. In mythology, it is known as the battleground when the Giants tried to drive out the Greek Gods from Mount Olympus. At the end of our Halkidiki adventure, we explored Kassandra and stayed at the luxurious four-star Flegra Palace Hotel, near the beach town of Pefkochori.

The hotel hosted us for three days, and from there we enjoyed nearby beaches, dined at beachside restaurants, and wandered through ancient ruins.

Flegra Palace Hotel—Luxury Awaits Near the Sea

We arrived at Flegra Palace Hotel in the early afternoon and were greeted warmly at reception. Within minutes we were offered a glass of orange juice to revive us from our journey. Sipping on my beverage, I took some time to walk around the lobby. It had bold reds and pinks, and a very cosmopolitan vibe.

On one side, floor to ceiling windows and sliding glass doors opened to a pool with rows of sunning chairs and a few cabanas. I decided right then, our afternoon itinerary needed some pool time.

The hotel is made up of several buildings. The lobby and restaurant are in the main building, and guest rooms are spread out in six buildings throughout the property. In between the buildings are gardens with flowering plants, palm and olive trees.

Our Flegra Palace Hotel Room

Staff led us to our second-floor room. It featured a double bed with crisp white linens, a desk and aqua accent chair. There was also a refrigerator, safe, LCD TV, and balcony with peek-a-boo sea views.

My favorite decoration soon became an inviting painting of the ocean with turquoise water and swimming fish that made you want to dive into it.

I also appreciated the roomy bathroom with granite countertops and modern fixtures.

The property has 83 rooms and suites, including double rooms, superior rooms, family suites, executive rooms and grand suites. If you are traveling with children, there is a separate kid pool and a play area.

During our time in Kassandra, the hotel proved to be ideally situated for exploring the area. By car, we were minutes away from beaches and towns and could easily escape back to the quiet of our comfortable room.

Dining at the Flegra Palace Hotel

There are three dining options at the hotel. Bar Soleil overlooks the pool and has a glass floor. The menu features cocktails and bar snacks.

Ambrosia is next to the bar and overlooks the pool area. They serve an a la carte menu inspired by the Mediterranean Greek diet. Titanes, the restaurant in the main building, serves a buffet breakfast and dinner. Breakfast is complimentary, and guests can opt to include evening meals.

Our package included dinner and breakfast, and we were impressed by the selection and quality. Since I like to try new foods, I appreciated the variety of items and enjoyed my favorite Greek staples like Feta, sesame sticks, and fresh vegetables.

At dinner, guests could also add on alcoholic beverages to their meal, and being wine lovers we ordered Greek rose.

Breakfast had a range of dishes including eggs, breakfast meats, pastries, yogurt, fresh fruit, apple cake and almond chocolate bread.

Exploring Near Flegra Palace Hotel

We spent our days at the beach or exploring towns, all easily accessible from Flegra Palace Hotel.

Beaches

If you want to mix up your day at the beach with shops and dining, head to the nearby beach town of Pefkohchori. We were there in June, and the full summer season had not yet started. While there were plenty of beachgoers, it was still easy to find a spot to lay out your towel. If you need a break from the sand, steps away are shops, markets, donut shops, gelato shops, and restaurants.

One nice thing about spending a beach day in town is that if you happen to get caught in a thundershower, you can easily slip into a nearby restaurant to wait it out. During our rain shower hiatus, we dined at Paralia Aeollos. For our first course, we ordered a Greek salad to share. We also had the grilled prawns.

And, the grilled octopus.

For drinks, we had Greek beer. Our table had a view of the sea, and the staff made sure we felt welcome. I would recommend dining here.

If you’d rather get away from town, there are plenty of off the beaten track beaches. I recommend Paragg Beach, which is about 10 minutes from the hotel and has a couple of food huts.

History of the Area

To get our history dose, we checked out the Temple of Ammon Zeus in the beach town Kallithea, which is about a 25-minute drive from the hotel. The site dates back to the 8th century BC. During the season, it is open weekdays from 8 am to 3 pm and closed on Sundays.

When You Visit Kassandra

The Flegra Palace Hotel made our last days in Halkidiki very relaxing. With our Haniotis Car rental, we had the ease and freedom of getting around. To book your stay at the Flegra Palace Hotel, visit their website.

Flegra Palace Hotel is an hour from Thessaloniki Airport. If you are looking for overnight accommodations in Thessaloniki, I recommend the Hotel Olympia or The Park Hotel. If you plan to visit Athos, Halkidiki’s third finger, I suggest Pension Irini, which is a short drive from the city center.

You can find more information about Halkidiki at Pass2Greece, Visit Halkidiki and Visit Greece.
