Here in Arizona there are plenty of places to grab delicious tacos. They are pretty much a staple item on any menu you glance at, from small shops in strip malls to fine dining restaurants you will find an imagining of the taco. However, right here in Phoenix we have what Travel Channel’s Food Paradise has named the #2 Best Mexican spot across the country, our very own Taco Guild.

Located at 7th St and Osborn in what was once the Bethel Methodist Church, Taco Guild has brought old and new together in harmony.  The church was originally constructed in 1893 and then rebuilt in 1955, the original dated cornerstones are still there. Stepping through the studded wooden doors into the building you are greeted by stunning stained glass windows, murals and soaring wooden-beamed ceilings. High above, a unique chandelier is a center piece as you gaze heavenward taking in the handcrafted, original beauty of the building. The pews became booths and the plaques memorializing the past members still hang. A truly honorable repurposing of a historic building in the valley.

The restaurant has an intimate feeling seating only 180 guests and has more tequila options than seats! Bringing out the Bible of tequila and you will truly garner some deeper knowledge of this smooth drink. With 200 tequilas to choose from the Taco Guild has everything from margaritas to sipping tequila available. I really recommend the blended margarita; elderflower liquor and tequila is a perfect complement to every Mexican meal. If tequila isn’t you mix Taco Guild also serves up ice cold, locally brewed craft beers such as Cartel Random Handle, Four Peaks 8th Street Pale Ale, and Sleepy Dog Parched Pooch Hefeweizen.

Start out your meal with made to order guacamole, made fresh and with several optional flavor profiles. Looking for a little spice have the Grilled Serrano. Want to try something a little sweeter go for the Caramelized Pineapple-Mint guacamole. Chips are made fresh locally and served with three different salsas. Next order the Schreiner’s Chorizo Meatballs, with chorizo from one of my favorite sausage joints (located right up the street) and served with a delightfully smoky sweet chipotle prickly pear sauce.

Now on to the  main attraction: tacos. Taco Guild provides Old World options and New World options in their taco selection and I will be honest when I say I have tried every single taco that they serve, there is not a single wrong choice. Tacos are served in house made corn tortillas, or if you want in lettuce cups. An old-world favorite is the Urban Bean Coffee Braised Beef taco, served with caramelized onion, mango jicama relish and Cotija cheese, this taco will tantalize your taste buds with savory beef and sweet relish. On the new world side, there are options like Tropical Ono which is menonita cheese, roasted tomato salsa, coconut slaw, mango, tomatoes and cilantro. Or try the delicious Molida Lamb taco that is served with creole aioli, blue cheese and sweet potato “hay” that is savory and tender.

If you are looking for a lighter option, try the Grilled Romaine Salad. This delicious but unassuming salad is a head of romaine lettuce halved and coated in cracked pepper olive oil and grilled which gives it a smoky flavor then topped with blue cheese, jalapeño bacon bits and the most delicious creamy cilantro dressing it will certainly become a favorite.

The menu is filled with harmonious options that are sure to fill not just your stomach but your spirit. With the use of locally sourced, farm fresh ingredients and bringing in from other local Arizona businesses Taco Guild is delivering top notch quality from Matt Janiec, the Guild Master. This was not just turning a church into a restaurant, this passion project intertwines the history of a building with unique, delicious fare. The Guild masters created a dining experience by taking us to church and feeding us.
