While days get hotter during the Phoenix summer months, it remains breezy and cooler in Sedona, just two hours north. I love the Sedona Red Rocks and there's no better place to relax and take advantage of the great Arizona summer deals than at Kimpton Amara Resort & Spa in Sedona.
Kimpton Amara Resort and Spa, Sedona
Sedona is usually about 10 degrees cooler than Phoenix during the summer, and Kimpton Amara Resort and Spa is a great place to stay while you escape the heat. I have had the privilege of staying at Amara a couple of times and it is such a lovely spot. While you are in the center of Sedona, once you head down the driveway to the resort, you feel as if you are away from everything. For me, that's the perfect balance.
This summer, Amara is offering guests an Escape the Heat package, which gives you the chance to enjoy a discounted stay, stargazing amidst the majestic red rocks, activities on the lawn, and chilling in the infinity-edge saltwater pool with the Cleopatra Red Rock Formation as your backdrop. Of course, the Amara Spa is also steps away so you can book your relaxing massage during your stay and take advantage of the area's metaphysical energy.
The Escape the Heat package, which starts at $260 per night and is available May 31 through September 11, 2016, includes:
- Deluxe accommodations
- Two welcome cocktails per stay, when booked via the resort's website
- A 10% discount for Sunday through Wednesday stays
- Complimentary daily coffee and tea, morning yoga, bike rental, and nightly hosted social hour from 5 to 6 pm

Stargazing in Sedona
For those staying at the resort on weekends, you can enjoy Stargazing S'mores every Friday and Saturday night from Memorial Day through Labor Day. A local astronomy expert will help guide you through the solar system via iPads with a stargazing app.
Sedona's “Dark Sky Designation” means you can see stars in Sedona you will never see in the lights of the city. Complimentary s'mores kits are provided for tasting marshmallows around the outdoor fire pits and, because nights can get chilly even in summer, blankets are available for snuggling.
Monsoon Meditation at Amara Spa
The Amara Spa has six treatment rooms, offering massages, facials, body treatments, foot and hand rituals, nail services, and spa packages. Available Memorial Day through Labor Day, you can enjoy the new Monsoon Meditation treatment.
Many travelers head to Sedona to reconnect spiritually to the local environment and harness the metaphysical energy of Sedona. Monsoon Meditation embraces this spirit by using rose quartz crystals from Sedona's vortexes to open heart chakras to unconditional love and to aid in emotional healing. The treatment uses massage oils rich with native ingredients that envelop the aroma of Sedona's Verde Valley.
The 90-minute Monsoon Meditation is $190 this summer. You start with focused breathing connecting you to your inner self. The sounds and vibration of heart chakra tuning forks combined with Sedona sun charged rose quartz crystals facilitate a concentrated state of relaxation. Complete the journey with a massage incorporating the oils from a local artesian distillery and fluid massage movements. As a parting gift, you receive a rose quartz crystal and heart affirmation to continue the meditation once you return home.
Amara Spa also has a private yoga studio with free daily classes for resort guests, eucalyptus steam rooms, men's and women's locker rooms with showers, and a retail boutique selling all-natural products. I haven't had the new Monsoon Meditation, but my massage at Amara Spa was delightful and I enjoy just relaxing in the steam room.
Rooms at Amara Resort and Spa
Amara Resort & Spa is an intimate, boutique resort that offers 100 spacious guest rooms and suites, combining modern design with Arizona’s comfortable, laid-back lifestyle and views of the surrounding red rocks, Oak Creek and lush foliage. While Amara is just steps from the hustle and bustle of Sedona’s uptown shopping, dining and cultural hub, the resort is situated below the main area, nestled on the banks of the creek, which makes it feel worlds away.
On my last stay, I had one of the suites on the creek and I could have stayed there for days. It had lovely outdoor patios, ideal for stargazing in the evening with my husband. A glass of wine, a blanket around my shoulders, the sounds of the creek in the distance, and stars twinkling overhead are perfection.
Dining at SaltRock
Amara’s signature restaurant, SaltRock showcases a menu of Southwestern-inspired cuisine marrying the fresh, light and seasonal approach to California cooking with culinary traditions and ingredients of the Southwest and Verde Valley. Lead by Executive Chef Robert Hoffman, SaltRock serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and its outdoor patio offers guests a breathtaking setting under the stars with a majestic red rock backdrop, live music Thursday through Saturday and views of the heated, sea salt infinity-edge pool and nearby fire pits.
I've had some unforgettable bites at SaltRock. Click here to read about the deviled eggs, which I still crave. I would also suggest the grilled corn and the duck confit tacos.
