Emerald Waterways held a dual christening event on Friday, August 21, in the Hungarian capital city of Budapest as it officially launched its two newest ‘Star Ships’ – the Emerald Dawn and the Emerald Sun. US travel industry veteran Kelly Bergin, as the godmother of the Emerald Dawn offered these words of praise: “It is truly an exciting honor to be selected as the godmother of the new Emerald Dawn and to be part of the Emerald Waterways brand, which represents the best of what our industry has to offer.” UK travel industry veteran Julie Kendrick preceded her christening of the Emerald Sun with her own words of excitement, “TheEmerald Sun, with her innovation and style, will bring immense enjoyment and everlasting memories for everyone who sails in her and to be not only part of that experience but to be Godmother means I am an Ambassador for her and a brand which I believe is leading the way in putting stylish and iconic vessels into the river cruise market…this privilege would take those ‘pinch me moments’ to another level!!”
Kelly Bergin has more than 25 years experience in the travel industry and was recently named President of OASIS, a national affiliation of independent travel consultants, and one of the largest Internet-based travel companies in the US. Julie Kendrick who, having starting her career as counter sales staff at Co-operative Travel more than 25 years ago, has risen through the UK travel industry’s ranks to become Head of Commercial and Marketing at Midcounties Co-operative Travel, the UK’s largest independent Co-operative. Both godmothers share a true love and passion for cruising – and as strong advocates of the fastest growing segment known as river cruising, support and train countless other travel professionals.
The new ‘Star Ships’ carry 182 guests in 72 suites and 20 staterooms, including two specifically built for solo occupancy. Ship innovations include an onboard heated swimming pool with a retractable roof, which transforms into a movie theater in the evening; two restaurants – Reflections, the main dining room, and The Terrace, which serves breakfast and lunch; and a new type of cabin design that replaces the run-of-the-mill French balcony, common to most ships, with an indoor balcony complete with decked area and an ingenious open-air system. With the simple push of a button, the upper half of the floor-to-ceiling panoramic window drops down to allow an open-air opportunity; top suites separate the balcony from the cabin with sliding doors. In addition, there’s an onboard hairdresser, massage therapy room and fitness area.
Strong value continues with the fare inclusions: all transfers to and from the ships; all onboard (and some on-shore) meals; unlimited tea and coffee; wine, beer and soft drinks with lunch and dinner; bottled water in the cabins; continental breakfast; free use of on-board bicycles; WiFi onboard the ship, most shore excursions; and more – including all gratuities.
