There are some great places to spend summer weekend in Arizona—definitely involving some pool time. One of my favorite hot spots to chill during the summer is the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess. Below are some of the exciting family activities they have planned for summer. You can also read my full resort profile here.
Active Fun for the Entire Family
If you hang out at the AAA Five Diamond resort in North Scottsdale this summer, there is definitely plenty to keep kids of all ages entertained. Head to the Sonoran Splash pool where you can go slipping down one of two 200-foot water slides. Or try this year's new SplashRider X-treme—a rolling water pipe for kids and adults. The SplashRider creates a constant wave for three to five minutes, giving you a chance to body surf or ride the waves on a boogie board.
If you're after action, you can also head to the Lagoon at the resort, where you can soar 25 mph at 37 feet up for 240 feet across the lagoons on The Zipper. You can buy a single ride on the zip line or a package for unlimited access to The Zipper and The Splash Rider X-treme for the day.
The Sonoran Splash pool is a 6,000 square foot oasis with pop-jet fountains, cabanas, games, and a zero-entry deck for the tots along with a shaded sandbox. While chilling poolside, you can savor fruit, water, frozen grapes and even a few grown-up drinks. Try the Parrot Punch with coconut rum, citrus rum, spiced rum, pineapple juice, Midori and fresh squeezed orange juice.
The Fun Team will have plenty of poolside fun all weekend this summer, with dancing games, tie dye t-shirt making, limbo, underwater bingo, giant bubble making, wooden turtle races, badminton, volleyball and bocce ball.
If you want to splurge—and claim your own private hideout for the day—rent a pool-side cabana with flat-screen TV, ceiling fan, sofas, reserved chaise lounges, refrigerator, bottled water and fresh fruit.
After dark every Friday and Saturday night this summer, join the family fun at the Techno Glo Party with black lights, lasers, fog, LED hula hooping, glow-in-the-dark bubbles, drinks and a DJ spinning techno music.
If you want something more relaxing for the evening, head over to the South Pool at 8 pm for the Dive-In Movies where you can float on inner tubes and enjoy movie snacks from the Sabrett hotdogs and taco carts.
Don't forget to catch the spectacular fireworks that light up the sky every Saturday night through Labor Day weekend. There will be a special fireworks display during the Fourth of July Freedom Fest, July 4 – 6, along with all-American picnics, concerts, vintage airplane shows and salutes to the military.
A Getaway for the Kids
Families can head to the Trailblazers Adventure Center and rent fishing poles to go catch and release fishing in the lagoons or rent rafts for the pool. Kids from 5 to 12 are invited to join the Trailblazers Kids Club where they can pan for gold, learn to solar cook, play sports, swim and meet a few reptilian friends. There's a different theme every day. The charge is $35 for a half-day or $60 for a full day. Lunch is optional and an additional $12.
The Trailblazers Family Adventure Center is also open 5 to 9 pm every evening for complimentary ping-pong, foosball, basketball, air hockey, shuffle board, videos and board games.
For families staying at the resort, Fairmont Scottsdale Princess wants you to be able to relax and enjoy your time, so just ask if you need cribs, high chairs, strollers, night lights, safety outlet covers, portable playpens, humidifiers, baby monitors, baby bathtubs, baby shampoo, kid's robes and step stools. It's all available complimentary during your stay.
A Spa Getaway for the Grownups
While the kids have their fun, mom and dad can relax at Well & Being Spa at Fairmont Scottsdale Princess. Start the weekend with “Feel Good Fridays” and the new Lunch & Enlighten series. You can enjoy a healthy spa lunch and a fun, informative talk. For $50, you can have lunch, enjoy the talk, then have all-day access to the quiet rooftop spa pool and all the spa facilities. Of course, if you really want to relax, be sure to book one of the many treatments at the spa. I highly recommend the Tranquillow Back and Face Treatment.
Also, be sure to check out the list of spa specials. The spa is running an assortment of specials everyday this summer. You can find out what's available online here.
Dining at the Princess
There's plenty of great food at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess this summer. La Hacienda is offering its “guacamole Fest” and delicious Fresca Floats made with traditional Mexican sodas. Adults can also try one of the hundreds of tequila offerings at La Hacienda or order up a nice cool margarita.
Bourbon Steak is offering a Post-Pool Prix-Fixe Menu: 3 courses with choices of summer salads, chilled soups, market-fresh fish, Jidori chicken, mesquite-grilled skirt steak, chef's sides and vanilla crème brûlée, nutmeg beignet or trio of house-made sorbets. The 3-course menu is just $49. For great family dining, check out Ironwood American Kitchen by the South Pool, which is cool, classic and comfortably residential with home-cooked favorites, an exhibition kitchen and InnoTab computer learning tablets for the kids.
Of course, if you're still hungry after all that food and the poolside fair, you can head to the Princess Shop and Coffee Market that has grab ‘n' go sandwiches, gelato, Starbucks coffee and an iPad lab.
An ideal way to keep the little ones from getting hungry during your stay at the Princess is with the Kids Resort Dining Passport. For just $35 per day, kids can enjoy three meals a day (from the kids' menu) that includes breakfast, lunch and dinner at Ironwood American Kitchen, Trailblazers Kids Club, the pools and La Hacienda, plus a snack at the South Pool during the Dive-In Movies. You can purchase the passport at the Leisure Services Desk in the main lobby.
