Today I took the MAX light rail right into Portland International Airport (PDX). But this wasn’t for a flight. It was for the grand opening of Portland’s local House Spirits Distillery’s tasting room! You’ll find it after security in Terminal C. And it’s open now for tasting and sales.

Although this is the world’s first airport distillery tasting room, House Spirits Distillery has been a fixture at PDX for almost three years via its kiosk, which earned a coveted Airport Revenue News (ARN) Award for Best New Specialty Retail Concept last year.

The new 1,250 square foot facility, which is located in Terminal C, will expand the brand’s footprint drastically to give the airport’s 14 million annual visitors an authentic taste of Portland all 365 days per year. At the tasting room you can enjoy House Spirits Distillery’s portfolio of spirits — Westward Whiskey, Krogstad Aquavit and Volstead Vodka. Look for limited-edition seasonal releases too. The House Spirits Distillery PDX Tasting Room sells an assortment of merchandise that will allow travelers to leave Portland with unique mementos of their visits to one of the world’s most creative cities.  Just in time for the holidays you can pick up such local gift sets as a gift box of Jacobsen Salts, Portland Bitters Project TSA-size botanical bitters assortment (one with Pitch Dark Chocolate as an ingredient!), cool t-shirts and more.

At the opening I chatted with Founder and Master Distiller, Christian Krogstad, who had just returned from China, where their Westward Malt Whiskey, especially, is doing rather well.

In addition to selling spirits and other gift items, the House Spirits Distillery PDX Tasting Room will also host regular “mini classes,” designed to introduce PDX flyers to the House Spirits Distillery products during their airport down time.

The distillery and main tasting room is located in southeast Portland at 65 SE Washington St. It’s in an area with other tasting rooms, a tea maker and restaurants and is worth the visit.
